Kei Chiong rode her first double of the season last Saturday at Sha Tin, including a very good ride on Lucky Girl in a Class 2 event that day. Having dominated the early pace of the race, her horse showed a strong acceleration in the home straight, found too much for his other opponents, and won in class record time. It was two wins from two starts for Kei on this horse which is clearly making big strides.
On Sunday I attended the biggest motorsport event ever in Hong Kong’s history, the Formula E race at the harbourfront circuit at Central. As a motor racing lover, and being an electric vehicle driver myself, it was exciting to see Hong Kong host such an event and it will be interesting to see how it develops in the future. The organisers did a good job staging this event and as with anything, there is room for improvement in the future.
Horse racing is also one of the main tourism attractions in Hong Kong, with Sha Tin and Happy Valley being two popular destinations for travellers during their stay in Hong Kong. Tonight we will have another of our Oktoberfest meetings at the city track which always prove quite popular. The eighth race is the Yew Handicap, a Class 3 event over 1,200 metres of the B course and has drawn a field of 12. The pace is likely to be good-to-fast, which could favour horses coming from off the pace. Blaze Stamina, Chevalier Star, Go Baby Go and Grand Harbour are all interested in racing forward, with Go Baby Go, the top weight, likely to get the lead from a good draw. Meanwhile, Grand Harbour is at risk of being trapped wide from his gate.
Courageous Brother was ridden back last time, but I think he might end up in midfield tonight with Great Charm and Speedy Achiever. Super Turbo should be behind them with Fantastic Feeling and Who’sthedude ridden from behind.
Super Turbo found all sorts of traffic trouble last week and is back for a quick reappearance. If he has more luck than he did last time, he is likely to finish much better than before, and I make him my main win and place chance. Courageous Brother will probably be closer to the pace than his first-out effort and is a major contender. Who’sthedude is making the jump to Class 3 but retains Joao Moreira and is working well. I consider him a strong placing chance in this very competitive race.
