Hong Kong made history in the Olympics with winning 2 gold medals already in a single Olympic Games, while the bronze medal from Siobhan Haughey at women’s 200m freestyle was another record for capturing 2 silver and 1 bronze Olympics medals so far by one Hong Kong athlete – marking two never-before feats in the history of Hong Kong sports! The support our athletes received from Hong Kong fans in Paris and in Hong Kong has shown how important sports is for our society to come together. This is why we should do even more to support our sports development. It is not only important for the development of our top athletes but also for character-building, nurturing mental strength and developing the mindset of persistent improvement and overcoming difficulties.
The performance of Cheung Ka Long is out of this world and his ability to overcome challenges and to strive in the face of possible defeat is just incredible. He is the third-ever male athlete in the Olympics history to defend the championship at Men’s foil individual event and the first-ever athlete in Hong Kong’s sports history to win 2 gold medals! Our HKJC Athlete Incentive Awards Scheme will reward Cheung Ka Long with HK$6 million, and Siobhan Haughey with HK$1.5 million so far, as a recognition for their exceptional performances during the Paris Olympics.
We in the Club have sport and youth development as one of our strategic focus areas, and we feel that the positive impact of sports in this regard should receive even stronger support in the schools. One of the examples is the Lam Tai Fai College which caters for students who have shown or proven their talents in sports on the pursuit of academic excellence. Let’s hope for more great performance in the remaining days of the Games to come, specially for Siobhan at the women’s 100m freestyle!
Congratulations to Cheung Ka Long and Siobhan Haughey for their outstanding achievements!
KYPRIOS bids to claim fourth successive victory
Following the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes Day at Ascot last weekend, we will be simulcasting the first three days (30 July – 1 August) of Glorious Goodwood festival from the UK, and Vincent Ho will make his Glorious Goodwood debut at the first day of the Glorious Goodwood meeting tonight (Tuesday, 30 July). Vincent will partner LOYAL TOUCH in the 4yo+ Handicap (S1-1, 8:50pm), and ROCKING ENDS in the 4yo+86-105 Handicap (S1-5, 11:10pm). I hope Vincent enjoys a good start at the meeting.
The Group 1 Goodwood Cup over 3200m is carded as S1-4 and will be run at 10.50pm tonight. The Aidan O’Brien-trained KYPRIOS was the winner of this race in 2022 and this top-class stayer was in fine form this year, achieving a hat-trick of wins since April including a gusty winning performance in the Group 1 Gold Cup (3991m) in his last start. In that race, he had to race wide tracking the leader, but accelerated well in the final stage to score. He is my win and a place selection in this first Group 1 race of the Glorious Goodwood meeting.
The Andrew Balding-trained COLTRANEis not only a steady performer but also a high-class stayer. He is a place chance under Oisin Murphy. Trainer John Gosden has a proven record in this race and this year he is represented by SWEET WILLIAM. Ridden by Robert Havlin, SWEET WILLIAM is in fine form and is also a place chance.
