Sha Tin hosts one of the most glamourous meetings of the season with Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse Day this Sunday (5 November) with a fusion of style, fashion and quality horseracing.
For many in Hong Kong, Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse Day is a celebration of haute couture as stylish racegoers don their finest outfits at one of the most eagerly anticipated occasions on the fashion calendar.
Ambassador Lin Min Chen will lead the festivities as we celebrate the significant contributions of Hong Kong’s “Ladies Of Racing.” Apart from the fashion, patrons can also savour gourmet delights, enjoy live music and soak in the vibrant party atmosphere.
The Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse – formerly the Ladies’ Purse – is one of Hong Kong’s oldest races, having been first run in 1846. We are grateful for the support of the Kwok family, who are one of the most successful and passionate racing families in Hong Kong, as we gather for the running of this year’s race.
The G3 Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse is carded as Race 7 at 4.05pm and carries prizemoney of HK$4.2 million and all 10 runners have been nominated for the LONGINES Hong Kong International Races at Sha Tin on 10 December.
The pace should be good with MONEY CATCHER the likely leader. CHAMPION DRAGON doesn’t always have enough gate speed to lead, but will race on the pace with NIMBLE NIMBUS and TOURBILLON DIAMOND also in forward positions.
MONEY CATCHER won this race last year on the limit weight (115lb) when he led throughout and held off BEAUTY JOY and SENOR TOBA. MONEY CATCHER resumed on 15 October when settling just off the pace and staying on to finish fifth to CALIFORNIA SPANGLE over 1600m. He should take improvement from that run and is a place chance despite giving weight to all his rivals.
ENCOUNTERED emerged as a potential top-class horse last season, winning five races. He showed rapid improvement at his second start this campaign when he ran home strongly for second behind CALIFORNIA SPANGLE over 1600m three weeks ago. Derek Leung takes the ride again and ENCOUNTERED is a place chance.
SUPER SUNNY SING was one of the stars of the four-year-old races last year, winning the Hong Kong Classic Cup over this distance. He has come to hand quickly this season and was very impressive defeating Spirited Express over 1600m on 1 October. SUPER SUNNY SING looks well placed on the limit weight and is my win and place selection with Matthew Chadwick aboard.
There are a number of other chances in the race and I expect further improvement from Caspar Fownes’ pair STRAIGHT ARRON and SENOR TOBA. NIMBLE NIMBUS has been consistent and also has claims.
