On Wednesday I was pleased to join with colleagues to announce the opening later this month of the newly conserved and revitalised Central Police Station compound. As Tai Kwun – Centre for Heritage and Arts it will provide opportunities to explore the fascinating history of the site, as well as to enjoy contemporary art and performing arts programmes.
Working in partnership with the Government, the Club committed significant resources to preserve and revitalise the site as an asset for the community. This reflects the Club’s own strong support for arts, culture and heritage – which is a key area of strategic focus for our charity donations.
Throughout, we adhered to the highest standards, both in conserving the 16 heritage buildings and in creating two new buildings – JC Contemporary and JC Cube – which were carefully designed to reflect the existing fabric.
We believe Tai Kwun has great potential to become an important, vibrant and engaging heritage and contemporary arts hub in the heart of Hong Kong – a place that will be locally, regionally and internationally recognised.
Beginning on 10 May, online booking will be available for the Tai Kwun Pass, which will provide access to the site from 29 May onwards. A limited number of passes will be available in the opening weeks, but the site will open later in June for walk-in visitors. To find out more, and to book your pass, visit TaiKwun.hk We look forward to welcoming you to Tai Kwun!
We race today at Sha Tin where the feature is the Hong Kong Macau Trophy, a Class 1 handicap and the second leg of the annual interport series. Romantic Touch was victorious at Taipa in March and will seek to complete the double in this event. We are racing on the C Course today and the pace is expected to be good with Calculation, Marvel Tribe, California Whip and The Golden Age expected to go forward and establish the running. The Golden Age is an interesting runner as he has been the sole leader in his recent races over longer distances and is coming off a good fifth place finish in the Derby. His trainer Tony Cruz has said he does not need to lead over the shorter trip today and his prior record over 1400 in France is perfect in two runs.
Calculation is an iron horse with versatility to handle different tracks and distances. He is making his 16th start of the season and he is a win and place carrying a light weight and with natural speed to set or contest the pace. A victory today is worth over $2.4 million in this $2.5 million race because Calculation is eligible for a $1 million High Achievement Bonus by virtue of a Class 1 victory. Romantic Touch is also in line for a $1 million bonus, having already won the first leg of the interport series and he is a place chance off a good effort in his last start when he rallied up the rail. A rain affected track would greatly aid his chances.
Racing Supernova should enjoy a good run from midfield and is a place chance along with The Golden Age. Super Fluke has won five of seven this season and is in career-best form but he is winless in seven races over the track and distance.
