I must take a moment to remember a friend. The racing fraternity lost a charter member last Sunday, and I believe I speak for many, most prominently our Australian racing community here, in mourning the loss of the “Cups King,” legendary trainer Bart Cummings.
I was very saddened to learn about the news of Bart’s passing. Bart was a long-term friend of mine and we spent many good times together over the years, be in it Hong Kong, Australia or during major races in other locales. While I always enjoyed seeing him on my many trips to Australia, our conversations at the yearling sales were among my most memorable. His 12 wins in the Melbourne Cup were unmatched and he earned immense respect from horsemen and the worldwide racing community. Bart was not just a successful trainer or breeder, he was a man of amazing character and resolve, and it was always such a pleasure to share his company.
Having won all the big races in Australia, Bart also had a major win in Hong Kong with Catalan Opening’s victory in the Hong Kong International Bowl in 1997. While it is sad for the Australian and global racing community to lose such a distinguished horseman and great man, we are all better for having had Bart in our lives and our industry. I extend my condolences to his family.
